Fujica Half

The Fujica Half is a beautiful little brick of a camera. Despite its heft, it is still fairly pocketable. I bought it mainly for the high quality Fuji optics. Mine came cheap on eBay with a broken meter, but unlike some cameras this one works great without it and still has fully manual function. I would not hesitate to bash it around. It can take a licking and keep on ticking.

Simple range focus with focal presets for portrait, groups, and infinity. Full aperture control from f/2.8 to f/22 and shutter speeds from 1/30 to 1/300. I set it at f/8 and 1/300 and used it like a point and shoot... which worked great on a surf trip to Oaxaca, Mexico where it was the only film camera I brought.

The images were a breath of fresh air. Cool, contrasty, and well-suited to the subject matter. The viewfinder and images are well coupled... no alignment issues. Horizons straight and nearly perfect. A few light leaks to sort out, but overall one of the most satisfying rolls I have shot.

Would I buy one?
Yes, maybe
If new to half frame, this is as good a choice as any, provided you have some photography experience.

Unique niche
More features than the flat-lensed Pen EE, more pocketable than the Pen EED. Hard to beat in this category.
